2021 trend forecast

Trend Forecast – Spring 2021 Fashion

2021 has finally arrived (I think we can all agree that we are very excited for it!), and with it comes new winter and spring fashion trends that will begin to reveal themselves.  As the world continues to operate in a way that keeps some at home all day while others have returned to a more normal lifestyle, the upcoming route for fashion has been very uncertain and questionable.

Throughout the closures and cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, many shifted their purchasing patterns and outfit choices because of the lack of a need to dress up or leave home.  This caused a surge in the trend for more comfortable and practical items that can be worn often and in many ways.  The demand for more unique and particular items only able to be worn in specific circumstances dropped significantly, causing designers to have to identify and adapt to this sudden change in need for consumers.  Thus, the love and desire for comfort-driven, versatile pieces gained an extreme popularity that does not have a clear end in sight.

This spring of 2021, the movement towards items emphasizing versatility will continue to make headlines.  More and more are taking their loungewear and dressing it up for a cozy, chic, and street-style oriented look.  While matching sweat sets and athleisure were all the rage in 2020, we will see a twist on them with designers boasting options that are dressier, yet still comfortable and wearable for a multitude of occasions.  Expect to see some changes on much-loved and often-purchased casual pieces, such as bold new colors and other striking additions to make the styles more fashion-forward and exciting.

Building on the desire for coziness and comfort, we will see the style of baggier, looser fitting sweaters, tops, jackets, dresses, and more. Go ahead and put your tight-fitting tops and blouses towards the back of your closet as more oversized, wide silhouettes will be everywhere.

For all of the puff-sleeve lovers, do not fret! This eye-catching and fabulous style will not be going anywhere soon.  This bold sleeve will be seen in dresses, tops, and jackets for an attention-grabbing silhouette that all love.

We were given a peek into this trend in 2020 – chunky shoes will continue to make their mark this year.  For spring, you can expect to see lots of clogs, chunky sandals, loafers, and flatforms.  This builds even more on the trend toward comfort and practicality as these styles are naturally cozy and able to be worn in various ways.  Dress these up and down, the possibilities are endless.

When it comes to colors, happy, soothing pastel shades such as light yellow, lavender, mint green, and baby pink will be the obsession.  With one of Pantone’s 2021 Colors of the Year being “Illuminating,” which is a soft, sunshine-yellow shade, we will begin to see more and more of it in new collections as well as in interior design and beauty trends.  Also, a major prediction for a color craze this year includes all shades of pink.

In terms of denim – loose is in, skinny is out.  Opt for baggy, slouchy, and wide-leg fits; they pair perfectly with your favorite oversized, knit sweater and chunky clogs for a striking spring transition look.

Shirt-jackets (a.k.a. “shackets”) and oversized button-ups will remain on the scene this spring and summer of 2021.  With a large movement towards layering, and again, versatility, these styles gained popularity with their various opportunities for wear.

Here are some of our current picks that will help you begin to build your spring wardrobe and create fantastic transition looks for the new season.
